In the fifteen plus years our Executive Director—Bill Philson—has been helping to steer the Mercer County Historical Society (MCHS). Many things have changed, but our main mission has remained the same—to protect and preserve the history of Mercer County.

Holiday Hours

The Mercer County Historical Society will be closed from, December 23, 2017, through January 1, 2017, due to the Christmas and New Year Holidays. We will resume our normal schedule on January 2, 2018. Our normal schedule is Tuesday through Friday: 10:00 until 4:30 and Saturday from 10:00 until 3:00. We are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays.

Christmas Open House at the Society!

The Mercer County Historical Society will kick-off its Christmas Season! The Mercer County Historical Society will be leading off Mercer’s Light Up night with an Open House on Friday, December 1, 2017. We will be open from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. when the festivities of the Borough will begin around the Courthouse. Drinks and a light snack will be offered. Tours of the facility will also be offered. A scavenger hunt for the children will take place—gifts will be offered. Come and start your Christmas festivities with us!

Veterans Day Closing

The Mercer County Historical Society will be closed on Saturday, November 11, 2017, due to Veterans Day. We will be open on November 10th until 4:30 and will resume our normal schedule on November 14th. Our normal schedule is Tuesday through Friday: 10:00 until 4:30 and Saturday from 10:00 until 3:00. We are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays.

A Civil War Captain and His Lady

On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, the Mercer County Historical Society (119 South Pitt Street, Mercer, PA) will present a program on the lives of Josiah Moore and Jennie Lindsay. Josiah was in the 17th Illinois Infantry from Monmouth, Illinois, and served in the Western Theater of the Civil War. Jennie was a rather well to do woman from Peoria, Illinois. The book explores Civil War life and courting during that era. This program will be presented by William Philson, MCHS Executive Director, and should be very enlightening. The doors open at 6:30 PM; the program starts at 7:00, and should end around 9:00. Please join us.

The Civil War Discussion Group is part of the Mercer County Historical Society’s ongoing efforts to provide programming related to local history. The roundtable meets on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May. Participation in the discussion group is open to the public and is free. On Saturday, November 18, 2017, the Mercer County Historical Society (119 South Pitt Street, Mercer, PA) will be hosting a book signing for Ghost Rails XIV—Hallowed Grounds by Wayne Cole, from 10:00 until 2:00. Wayne Cole will be signing his book—a 296 page, 200 photo, book. The price for the book is $50.00. This book covers Pardoe, Mercer, Mercer Junction, Coolspring Station, Filer Station, Houston Junction, and Rattlesnake Swamp.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2017, the Mercer County Historical Society (119 South Pitt Street, Mercer, PA) will present a program on African-American Troops during the D-Day invasion. The doors open at 6:30 PM; the program starts at 7:00, and should end around 9:00. Please join us.
